Description：

Using board games as a therapeutic means to enhance clients’ development, is getting more and more popular nowadays. Although board games by nature are attractive and fun to the clients, what weight more importantly are the therapists’ knowledge in selecting appropriate board games according to clients’ developmental and therapeutic needs, as well as attitude and skills in facilitation to strengthen the intrapersonal and interpersonal bonding. In this 12-hour course, a majority of the time will be spent experiencing the use of different board games firsthand, role-plays, active reflection and discussion.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants are able to:

1. Describe at least 3 benefits of group play therapy;
2. Name 10 areas of assessment for use in board game play therapy;
3. Identify at least 6 board games for children and their families in play therapy;
4. Describe 5 Therapeutic Powers of Game Play Specific to child development by using board game in play therapy;
5. Describe 5 Therapeutic Powers of Game Play Specific to Parent-Child Interaction by using board games in play therapy;
6. Learn 2 ways to modify the instructions to address clients’ developmental and therapeutic needs in play therapy;
7. Describe 4 Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) attitude and techniques in enhancing group facilitation;
8. Articulate 2 special considerations when using board games with clients with ADHD and ASD in play therapy;
9. Learn at least 1 skill in session design by using board games in group play therapy;
10. Experience in the process at least once by role-playing as a therapist in a practice session in use of board games in group play therapy;
11. Experience in the process at least once by role-playing as a participant in a practice session in use of board games in group play therapy;
12. Experience in the process at least once by role-playing as an observer in a practice session in use of board games in group play therapy.
